Process Unit & Instrumentation Numbering

 Process Unit Tagging & Numbering:

General Format XX-YZZ A/B 
  • XX are the identification letters for the equipment classification 
  • C - Compressor or Turbine 
  • E - Heat Exchanger
  • H - Fired Heater 
  • P - Pump
  • R - Reactor
  • T - Tower
  • TK - Storage Tank
  • V - Vessel
  • Y - Designates area within the plant
  • ZZ - are the number designation for each item in an equipment class 
  • A/B -  identifies parallel units or backup units not shown on a PFD.
Examples:
P-100 A/B
  • P is Pump
  • 100 is  Process unit no. 100 in the area of no. 1

Instrumentation Numbering:

  • General Format XYY CZLL
  • X represents a process variable to be measured    (T=temperature, F=flow, P=pressure, L=level)
  • YY represents type of instruments.
  • C designates the instruments area within the plant.
  • ZZ designates the process unit number. 
  • LL  designates the loop number
Examples:
FRC 83720
F = Flow shall be measured.
RC = Recording Controller.
837 = Process unit number 837 in area number 8
Loop Number = 20
